“I whistled the melody into a Dictaphone…”

Welcome to bassbeats’ Every Now & Then, featuring classic covers of well-known songs. Today is no exception. We’ll hear a couple of unique rock voices no longer with us in body, however, very much are in spirit.

The concept for this first tune came to the composers’ mind in Seattle during a 40-minute drive home. Some news anchor used the term in a story, from there it became a song title, then guitars were added and so on. The writer kept the melody in his head and whistled it into a Dictaphone so as not to forget it. Written in 15 minutes on a Gretsch guitar it became the hit of the summer. The song’s producer Michael Beinhorn said, “he felt like he’d been hit by a thunderbolt, absolutely stunned.” This version is a bit longer than the original and from someone I wouldn’t have expected to hear it from. The daughter of Ravi Shankar who had a big influence on George Harrison and the use of a sitar. Her given name is Geethali; she has taken home 9 Grammys and was named Billboard’s artist of the 2000’s decade chart. Norah Jones…

The unmistakable voice of one of rock’s greatest singers belongs to the late Chris Cornell who fronted Soundgarden on Black Hole Sun and also worked with the supergroup Audioslave and Eddie Vetter on Temple of the Dog.

No doubt this next artist is one of the greatest songwriters of all time from the 60’s on. As far as I know the only composer to have won a Nobel prize for creating poetic expressions within the great American song tradition and drew plenty of attention when introducing electric, amplified rock instrumentation to his folk lyrics. Here is the original Make You Feel My Love…Dylan.

I should have known, having been around music for 100 years that Adele covered this song.  She made it hers, don’t you think? There is no doubt this next composition is all her. Pushed by co-writer and producer Paul Epworth to hit notes she never knew she was capable of. It’s a breakup song and quoting here “It’s me saying get the f— out of my house instead of me begging him to come back.” The title is UK slang for I got your back. Pleasantly surprised to find this cover version by one of my favorite bands.

The second of two unique rock voices gone to soon, Chester Bennington and Linkin Park, one of the most popular and successful rock acts of the 2000s with more than 100 million records sold. I recently heard co-founder Mike Shinoda talking about some songs which did not make the cut on previously released album Meteora 2003 ~ “Fighting Myself” has attained views in the tens of millions. Here it is..
